Understanding the journey
The Trials & Tribulations challenge is an immersive three-part experience that invites participants to step into the shoes of refugees, gaining a small but meaningful glimpse into the trials they face.
Through a carefully structured day of reflection, physical endurance, and teamwork, participants develop deeper empathy whilst strengthening their own resilience and community bonds.
This isn’t simply a physical challengeβit’s a transformative journey that builds character, deepens understanding, and creates lasting connections between participants and the wider human experience of struggle and perseverance.
Walking in their footsteps
Consider the heart-wrenching reality of refugees fleeing war or natural disaster.
Imagine the fear and uncertainty as they leave behind everything familiar, carrying only what they can manage, searching desperately for safety and hope.
Picture the physical exhaustion, the hunger, the endless walking with no guarantee of what lies ahead.
How would any of us cope with such an ordeal? Would we have the strength, both physical and spiritual, to endure?
The Trials & Tribulations challenge offers participants a chance to explore these questions safely whilst developing profound appreciation for human resilience and the refugee experience.
The three-part journey
Part 1: The Gathering
Friday evening preparation
The challenge begins with an evening of connection and spiritual preparation. Participants come together for prayer, meaningful discussion, and reflection, building the foundation for the journey ahead.
After sharing a final meal together, they spend the night sleeping on hard floors in their clothes, without blankets or pillows, before rising for suhoor and making the intention to fast for the day.
This opening phase requires thoughtful planning to create a memorable and meaningful start to the experience.
Part 2: Take Flight
Saturday morning journey
The symbolic journey begins early Saturday morning as participants embark on a long-distance walk whilst hungry, tired, and thirsty.
Through walking, reflecting, and navigating challenges together, the group experiences something of the uncertainty and physical demands faced by refugees on their journeys to safety.
This stage emphasises endurance, mutual support, and the power of continuing forward despite discomfort.
Part 3: Serious Trials
The final test
After completing the trek, participants face the final stageβa challenging obstacle course designed to test physical limits and mental resilience.
This wet, muddy course pushes everyone out of their comfort zone, fostering deeper empathy for those who endure hardships beyond their control whilst celebrating the strength found in perseverance.
