Overview

The Trials & Tribulations Challenge is an immersive and transformative experience designed to foster resilience, empathy, and understanding of the struggles faced by refugees.

It asks participants to step into the shoes of a refugee, experiencing a small fraction of their trials first-hand throughout a day filled with reflection, physical endurance, and teamwork.

Event objectives

  • Awareness: Educate participants on the trials faced by refugees
  • Empathy: Provide a symbolic experience of endurance and uncertainty
  • Spiritual growth: Strengthen participants’ faith through reflection, prayer, and teamwork
  • Community building: Foster bonds through shared challenges and mutual support
  • Fundraising: Raise funds for refugee support organisations

Why this challenge?

This isn’t just any obstacle event—it’s an opportunity to grow, bond, and rise to new heights together whilst putting yourself in the shoes of those less fortunate.

Whether you’re aiming to strengthen physical endurance, deepen community bonds, or cultivate spiritual growth, the Trials & Tribulations challenge is designed to help participants push beyond limits and experience the power of perseverance.

By immersing participants in this thoughtfully planned challenge, Trials & Tribulations will leave a lasting impact, fostering both spiritual growth and a deeper empathy for those enduring unimaginable hardships.

The six-part challenge

Part 1: The Gathering

Friday evening preparation

The challenge begins with an evening of connection and spiritual preparation. Participants come together for prayer, meaningful discussion, and reflection, building the foundation for the journey ahead.

Part 2: Take Flight

Saturday morning journey

The symbolic journey begins early Saturday morning as participants embark on a long-distance walk whilst hungry, tired, and thirsty. Through walking, reflecting, and navigating challenges together, the group experiences something of the uncertainty and physical demands faced by refugees on their journeys to safety.

Part 3: Serious Trials

The final test

After completing the trek, participants face the most challenging stage—a wet, muddy assault course designed to test physical limits and mental resilience. This phase pushes everyone out of their comfort zone, fostering deeper empathy for those who endure hardships beyond their control.

Part 4: Hopeful Return

The journey towards safety

After the intense physical and emotional trials of the assault course, participants begin their hopeful return journey. This phase represents the refugee experience of moving towards potential safety and relief, though still carrying the weight of their experiences.

Part 5: Test of Patience

Awaiting relief

This phase simulates one of the most challenging aspects of the refugee experience: waiting for aid with no certainty of when it will arrive or what form it will take. Participants gather together whilst still fasting, experiencing hunger, thirst, and uncertainty.

Part 6: Final Reflections

Integration and commitment

The challenge concludes with structured reflection and spiritual grounding, helping participants process their experiences and consider how to carry forward the lessons learned.
