How can a respected but reluctant teacher be persuaded to lead a group’s challenge?
A group wants their local madrasah teacher to lead their challenge, given how respected and experienced she is, but she is hesitant, feeling she isn’t “the sporty type”. How can the group help her see she would be well-suited to the role, and encourage her to take it on?
Answer
Being “not sporty” isn’t the disadvantage it might seem. Some of the best leaders for this kind of challenge are exactly the people who understand struggle and can relate to others’ fears, rather than those for whom it comes easily.
A leader’s hesitation and vulnerability can become part of her strength, since it makes her relatable rather than intimidating.
For someone already experienced in guiding others through spiritual and educational challenges, this role is a natural extension of what she already does, simply moving that guidance into a physical setting while keeping the same spiritual foundation.
It also echoes the principle, reflected in the Prophet’s ο·Ί own example, of leading by taking part in the same trials asked of others, rather than only directing from the sidelines.
A respected position in the community carries influence β many participants may be waiting to see whether a trusted leader takes part before deciding themselves, so her involvement could be the difference that unlocks wider participation.
It also helps to frame the invitation as an extension of existing values: empathy, solidarity with those in need, and support for refugees, put into action rather than simply taught.
It isn’t an invitation to become an adventurer, but to extend community service into a new form. What participants need most is wisdom and spiritual guidance, not physical ease.
Finally, giving her time and space to reflect and pray Istikhara on the decision respects the fact that this feels outside her comfort zone, which, for many, is precisely what makes it meaningful.
Nobody chooses to become a refugee, but everyone can choose to stand in solidarity with them.
