Someone has been asked to lead their group’s challenge but feels unsure about it, particularly if they don’t consider themselves especially fit or sporty. How can they prepare for the role and manage worries about not meeting participants’ expectations?

Answer

These worries are completely natural, and taking the responsibility seriously is itself a sign of good leadership.

Backgrounds such as teaching bring exactly the skills the role needs: patience, empathy, the ability to guide others, and experience managing groups through learning.

Leadership on this challenge isn’t about being the fittest person there. It’s about helping participants connect the physical experience to something deeper – facilitating reflection, leading prayer, and helping people process what they’re going through.

A leader’s own understanding of Islamic principles around trial and perseverance, and their ability to help others connect their experience to broader faith lessons, is often more valuable than physical fitness.

What participants need most is help understanding why they’re doing the challenge, not just how to physically complete it – course supervisors are there for the practical side.

Preparing in advance can help: reviewing the challenge framework, thinking through discussion questions, and having relevant verses on perseverance and empathy ready to bring into conversation on the day.
