Should we run in winter or wait for better weather?

Should we run the challenge in winter conditions or wait for better weather? Some would say that winter makes it more authentic because refugees face harsh conditions, but I’m also worried about safety and whether people will actually want to participate. What’s the best approach for timing our event?

Responses

The evidence strongly supports scheduling during milder months from April to October. Winter creates significant health and safety risks that can overshadow the meaningful aspects completely.

Winter challenges shift focus from spiritual reflection and empathy-building to mere survival! Freezing water, biting winds, and prolonged cold exposure dramatically increase risks of hypothermia and injuries.

While refugees face harsh winter conditions, our challenge aims to build empathy within a controlled, safe environment. Meaningful connection comes from intention and reflection, not from accepting unnecessary dangers.

For participants wearing modest dress, wet winter clothing becomes particularly burdensome and dangerous. Spring provides excellent mud with manageable temperatures, summer offers longer daylight, autumn delivers ideal crisp conditions.

Milder months significantly increase participation rates – people are more willing to commit when they know it’ll be challenging but not punishing. Better participation amplifies fundraising impact and community engagement.

The challenge should push boundaries and simulate hardship within reason. Milder months still present substantial challenges whilst allowing participants to feel accomplished rather than just relieved to survive.

Different seasons within April-October offer distinct advantages: spring for excellent mud consistency, summer for extended activities, autumn for ideal muddy terrain with refreshing weather. Each brings character whilst maintaining safety.

Better weather lets participants focus on deeper meaning rather than enduring extreme discomfort. This balance ensures the experience remains empowering and transformative rather than merely enduring.
