Can participants wear salwar kameez?

Most of our community tends to wear salwar kameez rather than abayas — it’s our cultural norm and still Islamic and modest. Do we have to wear abayas specifically, or can we participate in our usual salwar kameez?

Responses

The requirement is full Muslim dress that maintains Islamic modesty. Salwar kameez can fulfil this perfectly whilst honouring your cultural traditions.

I would say that the challenge celebrates the rich diversity of modest Islamic dress across different cultures. What matters is appropriate coverage and dignity, not conforming to one specific style. The Quran emphasises modesty, and salwar kameez achieves this beautifully.

Agree with the above, though remember that the purpose of Muslim dress on the challenge specfically is to generate empathy with refugee women who make these awful journeys, often in suboptimal dress.

You may find salwar kameez offers you a practical advantage over other participants. For example, the loose-fitting trousers provide more freedom of movement for climbing and crawling. But at the end of the day, it’s your choice.

Refugee women from South Asian backgrounds often maintain their salwar kameez even during challenging circumstances. Think of the Pakistan floods. So your participation connects authentically with their experiences of maintaining cultural identity during hardship.

Also, your participation in traditional dress adds cultural richness and demonstrates that Islamic solidarity transcends boundaries whilst honouring diverse expressions of faith through dress.

Let me just say the sight of women in diverse Islamic dress working together creates a really powerful representation of unified Muslim sisterhood. Your cultural expression enriches the entire experience! So I say go for it! 🙂
