What kind of abaya fabric is most appropriate for this challenge?
Given that participants are likely to get wet and muddy during the challenge, what kind of fabric should we be advising them to wear? Many abayas are made from nida nowadays. Is that acceptable?
Responses
Any synthentic polyester blend is ideal for the challenge. That includes nida and others like rayon and satin, plus chiffon for hijabs. The important part is that polyester blends tend to be lightweight, breathable and quick drying.
Nida can become slippery when wet, making climbing difficult. It also has minimal stretch which can restrict movement during crawling and jumping. However, it’s still going to be far more practical than natural fabrics.
Avoid at all costs anything made of cotton or wool. When wet, cotton and wool get heavy, uncomfortable and can often chafe you skin. A dark nida abaya will always be preferable to cotton in this scenario.
Remember that the point is that refugees often journey wearing whatever they have and don’t get to choose optimal athletic wear. You’re not looking for the perfect fabric. With proper preparation and realistic expectations, nida can serve you well in standing in solidarity with refugee women.
