The girls know what they are taking part in, so they can raise money for a good cause. This section helps you choose it together and do it well.
Choosing together
Involve the girls and their families in the choice. Share two or three options at the first briefing, and let the girls vote or suggest.
A cause chosen together means more than one handed down. It also helps the girls feel the money is theirs to give.
What to look for
Choose a cause that supports refugees, particularly women and children. Look for an organisation that:
- is registered with the relevant charity regulator, and shows its number openly;
- publishes clear accounts and says how it uses donations;
- can accept Gift Aid, if you are in the UK;
- is willing to confirm receipt of the money in writing.
Name charities only as examples when you speak to families. Do not suggest that any one charity has endorsed the day.
Some supporters may wish to give from their zakat, which is obligatory charity. Whether a particular cause qualifies is a question for a scholar or the charity itself. Say so gently, and let families decide.
Setting a target
Choose a target that is realistic and easy to explain. A simple example shows how it adds up.
If 20 girls each ask 10 supporters for £10, the group raises £2,000. Even a smaller target is a real gift.
Set it as a group, not as a competition between girls.
Collecting the money
Use a single giving page run by the group, not separate pages for each girl. Name two responsible adults who can see every donation.
Pass on all the money promptly, and keep proof, such as the receipt or the charity’s confirmation. Share the final total with the sponsors and families.
Two rules keep trust high:
- Never give a prize for the most money raised.
- Never mention that the mums are taking part. Tell supporters only about the girls’ challenge.
A letter to supporters
The girls can adapt this note for family and friends. Please ask them to keep it short and in their own voice.
Assalamu alaikum,
On [date], I am taking part in a challenge with my madrasah. We will spend a day on an assault course and a trek, to understand a little of what refugees go through when they have to leave their homes.
I am raising money for [charity], which helps [short description]. Anything you can give will make a real difference.
You can sponsor me here: [link]. Thank you so much for your support and your duas.
