Arrival and setup
10:00am – 10:15am: Venue arrival
Initial separation
- Daughters taken by course instructors to warm-up area
- Mothers appear to gather separately for “social time whilst waiting”
- This separation is deliberate theatre building to the reveal
- Mothers change into trainers whilst daughters warm up
- Instructors prepare for orchestrated surprise
Creating the moment
- During daughter warm-ups, instructors suggest “let’s surprise your mums”
- Daughters enthusiastically call mothers over, expecting to show off
- Mothers approach with feigned reluctance but underlying excitement
- Instructors announce mothers will be joining the challenge
- Mothers protest about clothing, difficulty, unpreparedness
- Instructors connect to refugee theme: “Refugees don’t get to choose when to face hardship”
- Mothers “reluctantly” agree, daughters process surprise
- Mother-daughter pairs formed for mutual support
Warm-up together
10:15am – 10:30am: Joint preparation
Activities
- Basic stretching and mobility work
- Light cardio to raise heart rates
- Press-ups, squats, lunges (mothers already facing higher standards)
- Instructor explanations of safety and technique
- Building energy and team spirit
- Daughters adjusting to having mothers alongside them
Differentiation begins
- Instructors ask mothers for “three more repetitions”
- Daughters receive encouragement for completing standard sets
- Both groups supported but standards clearly different
- Creates early understanding of how challenge will work
The assault course
10:30am – 12:00pm: Physical challenge together
Course structure
Typical obstacles include:
- Cargo net climbs (mothers face taller sections)
- Mud crawls under barbed wire
- Balance beams and platforms
- Tyre walls and tunnels
- Water/mud ditches (wading and crossing)
- Rope obstacles and swings
- Climbing walls (mothers attempt harder routes)
Throughout the course:
For mothers
- Higher standards: “Let’s see better effort – try again”
- Additional elements: “Now try it without using your hands”
- Extra repetitions: “Three more times to get it right”
- Encouragement focused on capability: “I know you can push harder”
- Acknowledgment of genuine effort: “That’s the determination we’re looking for”
For daughters
- Age-appropriate support: “Brilliant effort! You’re doing so well!”
- Celebrating attempts: “Look how brave you’re being!”
- Progress recognition: “That was much better than your first try”
- Encouragement focused on participation: “Keep going – you can do this!”
- Building confidence: “Your mum is so proud of how hard you’re trying”
Mother-daughter pairing
- Each pair supports one another through obstacles
- Daughters often help mothers up or encourage them
- Mothers demonstrate persistence through extra challenges
- Both learn to communicate and problem-solve together
- Neither left behind – team moves together
Instructor facilitation
- Monitor both groups for safety and appropriate challenge
