This obstacle requires participants to crawl under barbed wire whilst staying as low as possible to avoid snagging clothing or getting caught.

The refugee parallel

Barbed wire represents the literal barriers refugees face at borders. Many must crawl under or around fences in vulnerable positions, with constant threat of injury or detection. This obstacle simulates the desperation and vulnerability of these moments.

Your role as leader

Setting the scene As you approach the barbed wire obstacle, maintain the roleplay:

  • “The border fence is just ahead – this is our only way through”
  • “Stay low and move quietly – we can’t be seen”
  • “Everyone needs to make it through – we can’t leave anyone behind”

Leading by example

  • Go first to demonstrate courage and technique
  • Stay low and deliberate in your movements
  • Show that maintaining modesty is possible even in difficult circumstances
  • Remain calm and focused to reassure others

Supporting your group After you’ve completed the obstacle:

  • Encourage each person as they approach: “You can do this, stay strong”
  • Provide practical guidance: “Keep your body flat, use your elbows to pull forward”
  • If someone struggles: “Take your time, we’re all here waiting for you”
  • Celebrate each person’s success: “Well done, you made it through”

Maintaining the experience

Keep the focus on survival

  • Emphasise the urgency: “We need to keep moving”
  • Acknowledge the difficulty: “I know this is hard, but we have no choice”
  • Build solidarity: “We’re all in this together”

Handle struggles with compassion If someone gets stuck or becomes distressed:

  • Stay in character while being supportive: “Help is coming, don’t give up”
  • Guide them through breathing: “Take steady breaths, you’re nearly there”
  • Reassure about clothing: “Don’t worry about the mud, we’ll manage”

After the obstacle

  • Acknowledge what everyone has just experienced: “That was frightening, but we all made it”
  • Keep the group moving: “We can’t rest here, we need to find somewhere safe”
  • Check on anyone who struggled: A quiet “Are you alright?” whilst walking
