Cargo nets require participants to climb up and over using balance, strength, and coordination whilst the net sways and moves beneath them.

The refugee parallel

This obstacle represents the unstable bridges, damaged infrastructure, and makeshift crossings refugees encounter. Like crossing a broken bridge or unstable raft, one wrong move could mean falling back into danger. The swaying net mimics the uncertainty of structures that might collapse at any moment.

Your role as leader

Setting the scene Approach the cargo net with appropriate urgency:

  • “This bridge is damaged but it’s our only way across”
  • “Move carefully – if one of us falls, we all help them up”
  • “The structure isn’t stable, but we have no other choice”

Leading by example

  • Demonstrate confidence despite the challenging conditions
  • Show deliberate, careful movement rather than rushing
  • Maintain dignity while managing your clothing
  • Encourage others through your calm determination

Supporting your group From the top or far side of the obstacle:

  • Guide technique: “Find secure handholds before you move your feet”
  • Provide encouragement: “You’re doing brilliantly, keep going”
  • Support those who freeze: “Look at me, not down – you’re almost there”
  • Celebrate progress: “Yes, that’s it, you’ve got this”

Maintaining the experience

Emphasise collective survival

  • “We need everyone to make it across – no one gets left behind”
  • “Help the person next to you if they’re struggling”
  • “Once we’re all across, we’ll be closer to safety”

Handle fear with understanding If someone becomes afraid or stuck:

  • Acknowledge their fear: “I know it’s scary, but you’re braver than you know”
  • Provide reassurance: “The instructors say it’s safe – trust in Allah and your own strength”
  • Offer practical support: “Take three deep breaths, then move just one hand”

After the climb

  • Gather the group: “Everyone made it – look what we can achieve together”
  • Acknowledge the challenge: “That took real courage”
  • Keep momentum: “The journey continues, but we’re getting stronger”

Working with course instructors

The professional instructor will:

  • Explain safety procedures and climbing techniques
  • Monitor the net for stability and manage participant numbers
  • Provide physical assistance if someone genuinely struggles

Your role is to:

  • Maintain the emotional narrative of the journey
  • Provide peer encouragement and support
  • Keep participants focused on the shared experience
  • Build confidence through the challenge

Managing modesty concerns

Prepare participants beforehand

  • Remind everyone about securing loose clothing
  • Suggest climbing techniques that maintain coverage
  • Normalise the physical demands: “This requires strength, and we all have it”

During the climb

  • Lead by example in managing your own clothing
  • Focus attention on technique rather than appearance
  • Encourage mutual support and looking out for each other

Key reminders

  • Show calm leadership in the face of instability
  • Encourage collective responsibility for everyone’s success
  • Acknowledge fear while building confidence
  • Maintain the roleplay of seeking safety together
  • Celebrate the strength and determination shown by all participants
