Route selection and safety assessment

Choosing appropriate walking routes

Select local paths that provide challenge whilst maintaining safety:

Suitable route characteristics

  • Local familiarity: Areas supervisors know well for safety and navigation
  • Circular path: Returning to madrasah without retracing steps
  • Muddy sections: Natural challenge from unpaved paths and puddles
  • Safe lighting: Enough ambient light for basic safety with torch supplementation
  • Emergency access: Routes where help can reach quickly if needed

Testing and preparation

  • Pre-walk reconnaissance: Adults walking route beforehand to identify hazards
  • Timing assessment: Understanding how long route takes at children’s pace
  • Hazard identification: Noting deep ditches, steep inclines, or unsafe areas
  • Emergency planning: Identifying exit points and nearby facilities

Volunteer recruitment and roles

Recruiting parent supervisors

Madrasah needs adult volunteers for safety and guidance:

Supervisor requirements

  • Familiar with students: Parents or regular madrasah volunteers
  • Basic fitness: Able to walk the route comfortably whilst supervising
  • Mobile phone: Communication capability for emergencies
  • Torch or headlamp: Personal lighting equipment
  • Warm, waterproof clothing: Appropriate dress for conditions

Group management structure

  • Lead supervisor: Front position, route navigation, pace setting
  • Middle supervisor: Monitoring main group, maintaining cohesion
  • Rear supervisor: Ensuring no stragglers, assisting struggling students
  • Small group assignments: 4-6 students per adult for close supervision

Advance parental communication

Parents must be informed and consent obtained:

  • Activity description: Clear explanation of nighttime walk purpose and structure
  • Safety measures: Details of supervision, route, and emergency procedures
  • Clothing requirements: Guidance on appropriate dress for muddy, cold conditions
  • Secrecy request: Asking parents not to inform students to preserve surprise
  • Opt-out provision: Alternative provision for students whose parents withhold consent

Student readiness

Ensuring appropriate clothing without revealing activity:

  • General guidance: Advising sturdy shoes and warm layers for “evening activity”
  • Madrasah provision: Having spare wellies and waterproofs available
  • Under-clothing: Old clothes beneath jilbabs that can get muddy
  • Equipment check: Quick verification before departure
