Overview
The Newlyweds adaptation offers young couples, particularly those married within the past year, an opportunity to strengthen their marriage whilst developing deep empathy for refugee families.
By participating in an organised mud run event together, couples embody Islamic principles of companionship, protection, and mercy between spouses whilst supporting humanitarian causes.
This version utilises existing commercial events like the Nuts Challenge, making it accessible to couples who cannot afford private venue hire whilst still maintaining the transformative spiritual and relationship-building elements of the Trials & Tribulations framework.
Key differences
How this differs from the main Trials & Tribulations challenge.
Commercial event participation
- Established mud run events: Joining organised challenges like the Nuts Challenge rather than private booking
- Professional organisation: Benefit from experienced event management and safety protocols
- No fasting component: The intensive nature of organised events makes this impractical
- No preliminary trek: Event itself provides sufficient physical challenge
- Simplified logistics: Registration, timing, and facilities managed by event organisers
Islamic foundations maintained
- Spiritual preparation: Friday evening preparation and overnight challenge in modest dress
- Modest dress throughout: Full Islamic clothing during the entire event
- Refugee empathy focus: Connecting couple’s experience to displacement struggles
- Mutual support emphasis: Strengthening marriage bonds through shared trials
- Fundraising commitment: Significant charitable giving reflecting serious purpose
Marriage-strengthening focus
- Prophetic example: Following the hadith “The best among you is the one who is best to his family”
- Quranic principles: Embodying “that you may find comfort in them” (30:21)
- Protective roles: Husband practicing Islamic leadership through support and care
- Partnership building: Creating shared memories and mutual dependence
Islamic foundations for married couples
Prophetic guidance
The Prophet Muhammad ï·º said: “The best among you is the one who is best to his family.” This challenge provides practical opportunity for husbands to demonstrate Islamic leadership through protection, support, and gentle encouragement during physical trials.
Quranic principles
“And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, that you may find comfort in them” (30:21). The shared challenge creates opportunities for couples to find strength and comfort in each other whilst facing difficulties together.
Marriage as spiritual partnership
Islamic marriage involves mutual support through life’s trials. This challenge allows couples to practice patience, communication, and sacrifice whilst working towards a humanitarian goal that reflects Islamic values of charity and empathy for the displaced.
