Safety protocols for nighttime activities

Pre-walk safety measures

  • Route lighting assessment: Ensuring adequate visibility for safe walking
  • Emergency contacts: All supervisors have madrasah contact and parent phone numbers
  • Headcount system: Regular counting throughout walk
  • Buddy pairs: Students assigned partners to watch out for each other

During walk safety management

  • Supervisor positioning: Adults at front, middle, and rear maintaining group cohesion
  • Communication: Regular check-ins between supervisors via phone if separated
  • Pace monitoring: Ensuring no one left behind or becoming exhausted
  • Hazard awareness: Supervisors identifying and warning about obstacles
  • Emergency procedures: Clear plan for injury or student distress

Risk mitigation

  • Familiar routes: Using paths supervisors know well
  • Appropriate duration: 45-60 minute walks suitable for children
  • Adult ratios: Sufficient supervision for group size and age
  • Exit strategies: Knowing nearest roads for emergency vehicle access
