Overview

The Sisterhood Challenge is a competitive adaptation of the Trials & Tribulations framework designed for inter-organisational competition between Muslim women’s groups.

This large-scale charity event brings together university Islamic societies, Muslim schools, and youth organisations for a day of empowering competition whilst maintaining meaningful connection to refugee experiences.

Unlike individual empathy-building versions, this adaptation emphasises team building, healthy competition, and community visibility whilst preserving the core purpose of developing understanding for displaced people through physical challenges in modest dress.

Key differences

How this differs from the main Trials & Tribulations challenge.

Competitive team format

  • Inter-organisational competition: Teams from different universities, schools, or community groups competing
  • 10K obstacle course: Extended challenge combining endurance with technical obstacles
  • Timed completion: Performance measured and ranked between participating teams
  • Team colours and identity: Visual team coordination through matching hijabs and outfits
  • Awards and recognition: Prizes for various achievement categories

Streamlined structure

  • Single-day event: No overnight gathering or extended preparation phases
  • No fasting component: Participants maintain normal nutrition for competitive performance
  • Competition focus: Emphasis on teamwork, fitness, and achievement rather than contemplative reflection
  • Professional event management: Large-scale organisation with comprehensive safety and logistics

Maintained empathy elements

  • Modest dress throughout: Completing challenges in full Islamic clothing
  • Refugee connection: Obstacles designed to reflect displacement experiences
  • Charitable fundraising: Teams raising money for refugee support organisations
  • Community representation: Demonstrating strength and capability of Muslim women

Enhanced visibility goals

  • Positive community representation: Showcasing Muslim women’s athletic capabilities
  • Breaking stereotypes: Challenging assumptions about modest dress and physical activity
  • Community celebration: Building pride and unity within Muslim women’s organisations

Event identity

The current Sisterhood Challenge name, whilst descriptive, might benefit from alternative branding that better reflects the connection to refugee experiences and community service:

Alternative naming options

  • “Bridges of Hope”: Connecting to refugee journeys and positive outcomes
  • “Unity Trials”: Reflecting both team unity and trial/challenge elements
  • “Pathways Challenge”: Representing refugee journeys and team pathways to success
  • “Solidarity Run”: Emphasising support for displaced people

Branding considerations

  • Islamic values reflection: Names that clearly connect to Islamic principles
  • Refugee connection: Terminology that maintains link to displacement experiences
  • Positive representation: Language that presents Muslim women’s capabilities positively
  • Community appeal: Names that resonate with supporting families and communities
